Hatz L- und M-series engines receive certification in Switzerland

The air-cooled Hatz industrial diesel-engines of the L- and M-series have been added to the list of OAPC-compliant engines by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) in Switzerland

The engines in the power range up to 37 kW (3 cylinder) and 56 kW (4-cylinder) are equipped with exhaust gas recirculation and diesel particulate filter and comply with the emission standard EU Stage IIIB and U.S. Tier 4 final. The air-cooled Hatz engines come as a plug and play solution and can be integrated directly into the customer application.

With effect from January 23, 2014 the Hatz engines of the L- and M-series have been added by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) in Switzerland to the Ordinance on Air Pollution Control (OAPC) list. The OAPC list contains the types of engines which meet the strict requirements of the Ordinance on Air Pollution Control and of which conformity was attested by an official body. Since 2009 new construction machinery with an output of more than 37 KW must not exceed a defined number of particles in the exhaust gas, or alternatively need to be equipped with a certified particulate filter system. The L- and M-series engines are the only remaining air-cooled engines in this power range which fulfil the current emission regulation in the EU and the US and, thanks to the entry on the OAPC-list, can now be used in OEM systems that are manufactured for Switzerland.

The Hatz L- and M-series engines have been revised with regard to the current exhaust emission standards and they are available since June 2013 with exhaust gas recirculation and diesel particulate filter. The engines thus comply with the emission regulation of the Tier 4 final in the U.S. and stage IIIB in the European Union. However, a compliance with emission regulations in the EU could be achieved even without the use of a particulate filter. Due to market demand and especially for emission-sensitive urban areas and use for underground and tunnel construction, the engine is available with (4L43 and 4M43) and without (4L42 and 4M42) DPF.

Together with development partners, the filter system was developed especially for the high requirements of an air cooled industrial engine. Because of high runtimes in the low-load range, the increase of the exhaust gas temperature which is required for regeneration of the filter system represents a major challenge. In order to reach the exhaust gas temperatures of about 550 °C, a special HC evaporator injects diesel into the exhaust system to raise the temperature. In this way the particles are being burnt and ensure a complete regeneration of the filter. The exhaust after treatment can be mounted in various positions and thus contributes to a variety of application areas. In addition, the particulate filter is separable and can be removed for cleaning, which in comparison to the closed filter systems has advantages in terms of operating costs. Manual cleaning is considerably less expensive than replacing the complete system. Particularly for applications in construction machines, which tend to a higher soot formation due to the usage profile, the maintenance costs can be kept low.

The L- and M- Series is constructed as a plug & play solution and is ready for use. This concept has been retained for the engine variants with particulate filter. So the customer has just to connect the engine, fuel lines and electric circuit to his application.

The engines of the L-and M-series are popular for applications that demand a high robustness due to their air cooling and rugged construction. They have significantly contributed to the fact that the company Hatz is known for tough and durable engines worldwide.
